Samir Kumar Shaw
The initiative to form the ‘Rajarshi’ Charitable Trust was taken in 2003 by Sri Samir Kumar Shaw. The organisation was registered in 2004 under the Charitable Trusts Act, Government of India. In fact, he was born into the family during a period of financial hardship.Father died at the age of around 50-55 years, when he was only 04 years old. At that moment, it was a great disaster for his mother, who was around 34-35 years old.The only sister and the eldest amongst the three brothers, who was just married a year ago.
However,
God is Great!
His brother-in-law assured responsibility for the family at a young age of around 22–24, raising the youngest brother—then only four years old and now the President of the Rajarshi Trust—with care and guidance alongside his sister. They also looked after his mother and two brothers at their native place and later took responsibility for the second-oldest brother when he was about nine or ten. In 1968, to protect their land, both brothers were compelled to move from a rented residence in Kolkata to a rural area, where they were admitted to Class VIII in a local school.
During his student life, the youngest brother was deeply influenced by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s novel Rajarshi, identifying strongly with the values of the king portrayed in the story. This inspiration awakened in him a desire to serve underprivileged students. He began offering free evening coaching classes to neighborhood children and later appointed a teacher to continue these classes when he left to join the Merchant Navy as a Junior Engineer. His exposure to the social work of a renowned international charitable organization in his locality further strengthened his commitment to serving mankind.
During his professional career, he established the present organization with a focus on supporting school dropouts and integrating them into the mainstream of society. Over time, he expanded its activities to include self-employment training for destitute women and initiatives promoting art and culture. Despite operating with limited resources, the organization continues its work and plans to launch a new health and hygiene project as a subsidiary of Rajarshi, along with environmental initiatives such as tree plantation. His core vision remains the care and balance of nature while uplifting economically and educationally underdeveloped communities toward a more sustainable and dignified future.
